Effectiveness of LON-CAPA for OGT Science Intervention

This team is investigating whether the online learning resource delivery and assessment system, LON CAPA can be an effective means to provide remediation intervention for students struggling to pass the science portion of the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT). LON CAPA is an open source, gnu licensed system developed at Michigan State University and collaboratively extended by users throughout the world. It is designed specifically to support instruction and assessment in science.

The team is currently building a prototype instructional sequence based on their analysis of the results of a practice OGT administered to freshmen in March 2004. (eventually add info about the resources used for background info, research questions, general research study plan, and eventually a link to the prepared article.

Effective Use of Technology

This team is investigating the effectiveness of using technology as an instructional tool in all mathematics classes. Geometers Sketchpad is currently being used in Geometry classes but no systematic study of its effectiveness had previously been conducted. In addition, the team is studying the use of selected technology as instructional tools and using the TI Navigator system as a tool to track student progress.

The Effect of Block Scheduling on Math and Science Achievement
in the High School Classroom

This project investigated a modified school schedule block to determine if increased Òtime on taskÓ improved OGT (Ohio Graduation Test) scores. The treatment occurred during the 2005-2006 school year. Test scores of the treatment group were compared to the base line established from the sophomore class results (2004-2005 school year). With the assistance of the high school principal, a block schedule was constructed to involve only tenth grade students in Geometry and Advanced Biology for the 2005-2006 school year. Surveys were designed to supplement test data and focused on student attitudes and current "knowledge" regarding block scheduling.
