Welcome to the website for the South East Ohio Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science, a collaboration of Ohio University, the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College, Shawnee State University, and members of the Coalition of Rural and Appalachian Schools (CORAS).
SEOCEMS is a regional center supported by grants from the Ohio Board of Regents, with additional support given by its collaborators. SEOCEMS is designed to contribute to the expanding state-wide infrastructure constructed to improve K-16 mathematics and science teaching and learning. While SEOCEMS focuses its primary efforts on the rural Appalachian region of Ohio, it also supports the mathematics and science project-centered efforts of OhioŐs other regional centers and professional organizations.
SEOCEMS pursues improvements in:
- Professional development in mathematics and science for teachers
- Pupils' access to quality mathematics and science
- Teacher preparation programs
- Applied research and evaluation focused on mathematics and science in rural Appalachia
- Recruitment and retention of mathematics and science teachers and faculty dedicated to mathematics and science teacher education
SEOCEMS is led by a team of leaders drawn from the centerŐs collaborating institutions. This team is guided by:
- Jeff Connor, SEOCEMS Co-Director, Ohio University Mathematics Department, connorj@ohio.edu
- Ralph Martin, SEOCEMS Co-Director, Science, Ohio University Department of Teacher Education, martin@ohio.edu
- Al Cote, SEOCEMS Center Coordinator, Ohio University, cote@ohio.edu
SEOCEMS is one of six centers located throughout Ohio. A brochure describing the vision for the Centers of Excellence is available here. For links to the other centers, please go to the links page.
